26 SEPTEMBER 2008
NIKE Ladies’ Race

Dear ladies,
We are organising Belgrade’s “most beautiful” event in at Ada Ciganlija on Saturday, 4 October 2008.
Our endeavour to promote running, recreation and healthy lifestyle to the entire population, and especially members of the fairer sex, will be realised once again – by organising the LADIES’ RACE with 3500 participants.
The race will be held for the ninth time on the circular course around the Sava Lake. The course measures 7.700 metres. The start and the finish of the race will, as always, be located by the Round Bath.
This year, the LADIES’ RACE will have a recreational character and all the participants will be winners, regardless of their result and ranking. Every participant will get a lovely T-shirt with the race logo, sponsors and organiser's presents and a participant's diploma. Once the race is finished – the race can also be walked, not only ran – we will stage a little party and a raffle with special prizes courtesy of the race’s sponsors – for the luckiest participants.

Also, an international women's race will be held within the Ladies’ Race. It will be an invitational race (the same course) for select athletes that will lend true sports dimension to the event. The last year’s winner in a very strong international competition was Serbia’s best female athlete Olivera Jevtić.
In order to ensure that everything goes as planned and that every participant, regardless of her age and physical condition, is confident that she will complete the course, either walking or running, we will organise medical service, both during the race and during the preparations.
The Ladies’ Race is the only mass (not only sports) event dedicated exclusively to women.
One of the partners of this year’s "Women’ Secret Ladies’ Race" will be the Katarina Rebrača Foundation. The Foundation is engaged in organisation and implementation of a campaign intended to raise awareness of breast cancer and aid in early diagnosis of the illness.
A special dimension to our event is lent by the fact that, traditionally, Serbian organisations for people with disabilities have accepted our invitation and a number of women with disabilities will take part in this event. At least on that day, they, together with the rest of us, will become equal members of the society.
We would like to further develop this traditional event, to create conditions and good atmosphere so that Belgrade is talked about, so that Belgrade becomes the hub of sport and recreation, so that Belgrade and Serbia are travelled to, so that Belgrade can offer good and healthy lifestyle, and so that Belgrade, just as many other cities worldwide organising such events, can boast the participation of tens of thousands of women.

Jevtić at the jubilee of “NIKE” Ladies’ Race

Today, the race for one of 3.500 race numbers for participation in the international 7.7km “Nike” Ladies’ Race starts. The race will be held for the 10th time at Ada Ciganlija on 4 October. The registration forms will be available (at the store of the prominent sportswear manufacturer at 9 Knez Mihajlova St) until the participant quota is reached.
Olivera Jevtić announced her participation (as a part of preparations for the European Cross Country Championships and possible World Half-marathon Championships), which will lend quality and mass attendance to the jubilee at Belgrade’s “sea”.
- We must limit ourselves to this number of participants, although we have been wishing for a far larger number of women to take part in this health movement for years now. The interest is such that the first edition of the race in a larger venue would result in participation of at least 5.000 ladies of all ages. We have met with the City Secretary for Sport Igor Miklja and agreed that Ada Ciganija is a beautiful backdrop, but one too small for this event – said at the press conference Dejan Nikolić, director of the Belgrade Marathon Ltd, the company behind the event.
The race’s partners are three ministries of the Republic of Serbia - the Ministry for Youth and Sport, the Ministry for Health and the Ministry for Work and Social Issues - as well as the Olympic Committee of Serbia, Universiade 2009 and a large number of sponsors, which testifies of the manifold aspects of the event.
Traditionally, Katarina Rebrača will take part in the race with her charity fund.
- On the first year I did not know what to expect, but three years later we function as a well-organised team. We are all united in the fight against breast cancer. We have distributed a large number of leaflets containing information on medical check-ups. On the same day, at the main square, we will stage a gathering directed towards the fight against this vicious disease. We are halfway through to acquiring by the end of this year a digital mammograph for the Institute for oncology and radiology. I am happy that “Nike” is with us. I say this as I consider myself a part of the organising team – said Katari-na Rebrača.
Luka Lazukić, “Nike” marketing manager, the host of yesterday’s gathering at 9 Knez Mihajlova St, said that “Delta sport” is the exclusive distributer of the famous brand. The ladies who register and buy something in the store while registering will get a special surprise present. Their goal is to encourage the population to take up sports as it leads to a healthier lifestyle.

The race that removes the barriers

As announced by Aleksandar Vujičić, secretary general of the Federation of associations of people with disabilities, over 100 members of the federation who are in wheelchairs, blind or visually impaired will take part in the race:
- Our motto is traditional: “We want to practise sport too”. We want to remove architectural and psychogenic barriers.

Triumphantly by the Arch

The races intended exclusively for members of the fairer sex represent a well-established movement worldwide. The New York Road Runners, organiser of the Big Apple marathon, will stage the closing event in a series of such races on 4 October.
In Paris, on 7 September, 13.000 ladies triumphantly crossed the finish line under the Arc de Triomphe.
On the same day, the London marathon organised the ladies-only race in London.
All the ladies who would like to find themselves in a similar atmosphere after the Belgrade race will be able to do so in Budapest on 19 December.

Public invitation of the OCS “Women and Sport” Commission

PUBLIC INVITATION OF THE “WOMEN AND SPORT” COMMISSION OF THE OCS EXECUTIVE BOARD FOR PARTICIPATION IN THIS YEAR’S “NIKE” LADIES’ RACE / ADA CIGANLIJA, 4 October 2008

This year’s “Nike” Ladies’ Race organised by the Belgrade marathon will be held at Ada Ciganlija on Saturday, 4 October. The autumn race around the Sava Lake traditionally brings together thousands of women from all over Serbia who, by running or walking, maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Ladies’ Race has an international character, and a special contribution is given to the race by the active participation of a number of top athletes, this year led by Olivera Jevtić, Serbia’s best athlete and an Olympian.

At its last meeting, the OCS Executive Board’s “Women and Sport Commission”, chaired by Milena Reljin-Tatić, pointed out that this race that brings together women who through running, recreation and active contribution to healthy lifestyle nurture true Olympic values, completely fits in with the strategy of the “Women and Sport” Commission of the OCS Executive Board found in its core formulation “as numerous participation of women in sport as possible”.

The Belgrade marathon’s Ladies’ Race demonstrated not only a high level of organisation, but also proved through its non-competitive character that it nurtures true tendencies of the modern sport in Europe and position of women in sport – respect of every race participant, transparency, good communication, friendship and an emphasis on the importance of women as pillars of the family, mothers of future athletes, women who are aware of the importance of sport for their own health and health of their families.

The registration for participation in the Ladies’ Race is free of charge and will be available until the quota of 3.500 participants is reached. The “Women and Sport” Commission of the Olympic Committee of Serbia, in cooperation with the Belgrade Marathon, invites all participants of the Olympic Games and all other athletes, regardless of their age, to register for participation in this race and to contribute actively to the promotion of a healthy lifestyle by running, walking and socialising.
The location of the Registration centre is Belgrade, “Nikewomen”, 9 Knez Mihajlova St from 11 am to 8 pm.
